What is TDS?
TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is a means of collecting income tax under the Indian Income Tax Act, where tax is deducted when payment is made by the payer to the payee.
When is TDS applicable?
TDS is applicable when payments exceed specified threshold limits. For example, professional fees above ₹30,000, rent above ₹2.4 lakhs annually, etc.
What if recipient doesn't have PAN?
If the recipient doesn't have PAN or doesn't provide it, TDS must be deducted at a higher rate of 20% as per Section 206AA.
How to deposit TDS?
TDS must be deposited to the government through Challan 281 on the Income Tax e-filing portal within the specified due dates. TDS returns must also be filed quarterly.
